Over the last few weeks, PANTHERx® Specialty Pharmacy has teamed with the Consortium for Public Education to provide students with the opportunities to apply STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) skills to real-life workplace challenges. We have had the pleasure of hosting teams from the Avonworth and Blackhawk school districts and have been immensely impressed by how innovative, progressive, and smart these young students are. On November 16 we were visited by Avonworth, and the next week on November 23, we hosted students from Blackhawk.

Specialty pharmacies face a unique set of patient challenges due to volatile and sensitive nature of the treatments we provide. This includes medications that require refrigerators to maintain a specific temperature.  Our discussions with the students from both school districts specifically assessed how we could improve these technologies to better serve our patients.

About Congenital Heart Defects

Congenital heart defects are incredibly common and incredibly deadly. Every year, around 40,000 children are born with congenital heart defects, and even worse, 100-200 deaths occur from unrecognized heart disease. Those totals do not even include the children that die before diagnosis. For those that survive with the condition, 25% will require heart surgery or other serious medical treatments. Congenital heart defects are life-long conditions, impacting growth and development.

While research has helped advance treatment of congenital heart defects to allow more to survive through adolescence and onto adulthood, science has still failed to fully understand the cause of the condition. Moreover, advancements in treatment are needed to allow for more of the afflicted to live healthy and normal lives.

About the Children’s Heart Foundation

The Children’s Heart Foundation has been a leader in funding research of congenital heart defects, and has provided nearly $8.5 million to the cause since its creation in 1996. This year, the local chapter has launched a new fundraiser – the “Hole” Lot of Heart Golf Outing at the Blackhawk Golf Course on September 24, 2016. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis both fall under the umbrella of inflammatory bowel diseases, a category of disease that afflicts close to 1.6 million Americans. Besides their prevalence, inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis are also frustrating medical providers because the number of cases being diagnosed is escalating. Since World War II, the number of cases have multiplied by 20. Moreover, these types of diseases are incredibly difficult to diagnose, with research showing that Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis are misdiagnosed an average of two times before finally being correctly diagnosed.
